“Adel is like a fireworks display, fun to watch from afar but you know you’d get burned if you got too close.” - Falling Out

An Excerpt from Falling Out

Adel is in math class when she hears the rain start to pound down on the roof. She quickly slides on her ballet slippers from her backpack. "Sir, can I go to the little girl’s room?"

"Yes, Adel." Her teacher quickly writes a hall pass and turns back to his math book. He rarely gives Adel much attention at all, really none of the teachers do. She can feel she’s more of an obligation they all have to go through at some point while working at this school.

Adel runs down the hallway, not wanting to miss the rain. She hits the back door of the high school that leads to the football field with all her might. The second she's outside, her white cotton dress starts to become as invisible as she always feels. Her bleached hair covers her face in a wet mess.  Her pink ballet shoes dance around in the football field mud ever so perfectly.  She flings her scarred arms back and spins herself into her own world. She feels baptized.
